New York records its highest-ever wagering handle at $2.3 billion for October
The New York State Gaming Commission has published its October 2024 report, revealing a record-breaking sports wagering handle of $2.3 billion for the month.
This new high surpasses the previous record of $2.11 billion set in November 2023. Notably, New York became the first US state to record a $2 billion monthly handle last October, and this year’s October handle reflects an increase of $300 million year-over-year. September 2024 saw a handle of $2.07 billion.
Despite impressive October wagering, gross gaming revenue (GGR) dropped by 14.9% to $176.3 million, likely due to increased player winnings with the NFL season kickoff—a factor mentioned by DraftKings in its Q3 2024 report. However, New York’s GGR for October 2024 still reflects a 5.8% year-over-year rise.
With New York State’s fiscal year running from April to March, and the year-to-date handle at $12.5 billion, the state is on track to surpass last year’s $19.6 billion record. October’s GGR also pushed the state’s 2024/25 revenue above $1 billion, now totaling $1.17 billion.
Interesting Fact: The highest GGR recorded by the New York State Gaming Commission was $211.5 million in January 2024.
In October, FanDuel led with a sports wagering handle of $907.6 million in New York, up from $784.2 million in September, and a GGR of $77.3 million, although down from September’s $97.9 million. DraftKings followed closely with a handle of $813.7 million and a GGR of $58.9 million.
Since the repeal of PASPA allowed Delaware to first regulate sports betting outside Nevada in 2018, New Jersey emerged as a sports betting leader. However, New York has now taken the lead, consistently posting monthly handles over $2 billion.
