EGBA Urges Austria to Adopt Multi-Licensing System for iGaming

The European Gaming & Betting Association (EGBA) has called on the Austrian government to reform its iGaming regulations by implementing a multi-licensing system. This change would open Austria’s iGaming market to more operators, replacing the current monopoly system and aligning the country with most other EU member states.

Austria is one of only two EU nations, alongside Poland, that still restricts iGaming to a monopoly framework. The EGBA criticizes this approach as outdated, citing a growing black market where thousands of Austrian players gamble on unregulated and illegal platforms.

The Austrian Association for Betting & Gambling (OVWG) estimates that adopting a multi-licensing system could generate up to €1 billion (US$1.04 billion) in additional tax revenue by 2030.Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the EGBA, stated:
“The evidence from across Europe is clear and compelling: multi-licensing works. It brings gambling activity into the regulated market, protects consumers, and generates significant tax revenue.”
