South Australia is launching the ‘Take a Break’ campaign statewide after a successful trial aimed at supporting individuals in managing their gambling habits.

The program simplifies the self-exclusion process, making it easier for those looking to limit their gambling activities.

During the four-week trial, 19 individuals used the self-barring system across 31 venues. If expanded to all active gaming rooms in the state, the campaign could lead to approximately 226 self-exclusions over a similar timeframe.

Participants in the trial represented a wide demographic, ranging in age from 19 to 79. The group was nearly evenly split by gender, with 11 women and 8 men opting for self-exclusion. The barring periods varied, spanning from three months to indefinite, and 20% of participants sought referrals to Gambling Help Services.

Key Insight: The campaign is particularly designed for those who may be hesitant to seek direct assistance but are motivated to address their gambling behavior.

Administered by Consumer and Business Services (CBS) in collaboration with the Australian Hotels Association South Australia and Clubs SA, the initiative offers a discreet and accessible self-barring option. Users can easily complete the process through a simple online form available via QR code.

The statewide rollout strategically coincides with the holiday season, a period often linked to increased gambling due to financial pressures and family-related stress.
